HEARTH COOKING!!!

Hello There My Friends,

Well another week has passed and we have done little work on the kitchen remodel. Ed was out of town for 4 days, and that really slows down the work. Our grill for the window did come in and it FITS!!! ;-)
This is the second time ordering them, and it is a slow process. We ordered just one to make sure it fit, and went back to Home Depot today to order the other three. It will be another three weeks before they are in, and then we will be able to paint them and put them up in the windows...I can't wait! ;-)

I am also waiting on a flush mount ceiling light for the sitting area. That will be another four weeks. Looks like everything will be arriving around the same time. I guess that will keep us busy!

I thought I had shared the desk and TV cupboard Ed made me for the kitchen, but I guess not. Anyways, I have a small TV in the kitchen and had been wanting to build some type of cupboard to set it in and hide it behind when not in use. I came up with this design, and Ed did a great job! Looks exactly how I had envisioned it.

This hangs on a wall in the kitchen above the plantation desk Ed built.

I bought myself a present this week! No, it was not anything for the house, a primitive or an antique. I know, I know... horror of horrors! ;-)  It is a new digital camera! We have been having fun taking pictures and learning how to use it. I am far from a photographer, but the camera does take much better pictures then my old one. Here are a couple of the girls.

And one of Zeke and Lady Lydia enjoying their time outside.

Now before any of you ask, "Why does she always show pictures of her two girls, but we rarely see the boys"? Well this is why!! ;-)

Yep, this is what they usually do when I have the camera out and try to snap a picture of them. Silly, I know!

Well I suppose now I should write something that has to do with the title of my post! Hearth Cooking!
Like so many of you, I love Prims, Early American, and Colonial, and I am enamored with the life of those who came before us.  I try never to romanticize this life. Their life was filled with hardships and struggles that most of us could not even begin to imagine, but I like to try to experience if but briefly what life may have been like for a women living 200 years ago, so tonight dinner was made on the open hearth, and it was... Delicious!
It was time consuming, it was hot, and it was back breaking! ;-)

I made "Sticky Chicken", which I normally prepare in the oven, and it is always yum, but tonight it was really yum!!!

I also made baked potatoes in the hot coals. Why do baked potatoes always taste better when cooked in hot coals?

I did cheat, and warmed up the peas in the microwave. I saw no sense in opening a can of peas and then putting them in a pan over the fire...after all they are in a can! Someone preparing peas 200 years ago would not have been getting them from a can!  I enjoyed my dinner preparation tonight, and the food was very good, but I would not want to have to prepare every meal that I fed my family this way. As much as I love the decor, the look, and the history of Early America... I also love my oven, refrigerator and dish washer!

I appreciate the woman(and men) who forged a life in the wilderness of this country. I am grateful to those who came before, and the sacrifices they made. I am humbled by their strength & perseverance, and  I hope I honor them by the way I live my life. I take nothing for granted, and appreciate all that I have.

Well my friends it is time to wrap things up, and go watch a bit of my modern distraction(TV)before I tuck myself in my nice warm bed. Thanks for stopping by, and have a blessed rest of the weekend!

  8. Hi Kim,

I love the tv cabinet and desk! You're so lucky to have your furniture pieces custom made. It's so cool that you can cook on the hearth. My daughter would love that! We have a gas fireplace and she is always asking to cook hot dogs or roast marshmallows.

I can't wait to see your kitchen remodel in progress. I know it's going to be awesome.

    Happy Valentine's Day!

  10. LOVE LOVE LOVE your cabinet- and the sheep too! It's is just perfect for that spot. And what fun to cook on the hearth! I went to a 'class' on hearth cooking many years ago but never did it here at home other than marhmallows and popcorn. I don't think they count though! LOL

    Happy Valentine's Day!!
